The power of oils in skincare

What is a facial oil and what does it do for my skin? Facial oils are anhydrous products (meaning they don't contain water) that penetrate deeper layers of the skin and protect the skin by locking in moisture. It's always a good idea to combine water and oil products together, as due to absence of water oils cannot hydrate our skin, only water containing products can be hydrating, such as water based serums, facial mists and emulsions (creams). Together, oil and water work synergistically by hydrating and moisturising the skin and keeping this moisture sealed. What are the types of oils in skincare and their function? Facial oils on the market typically come in under several different forms: Single ingredient facial oil, such as our Cold Pressed Raspberry Seed Oil. These oils are made by pressing the seeds and cold-pressing in order to retain all the nutrients that are later passed on to your skin. It's important to choose cold-pressed oils because their refined versions do not carry the same benefits to their cold-pressed counterparts.

Multi ingredient facial oils are typically a combination of two or more oils, for example cold pressed Raspberry Seed Oil with Rosehip Oil. They can also contains certain oil-soluble extracts and essential oils or fragrances

Oil based facial serums, such as our Coconut Vanilla Anti-Aging Serum. These products are highly concentrated, made using only oil-soluble ingredients and have a specific function, a role to play in skincare. Our serums is a blend of several oils designed for mature skin and highly concentrated active oil-soluble ingredients such as Bakuchiol and Algae extract that work synergistically to help tighten, smooth and transform your skin. Serums and facial oils share similarities, yet serums boast a higher concentration of potent constituents and finer oil compositions.

How to use facial oils and what are their benefits?

Deeper penetration and anti-aging benefits Facial oils and oil based serums have an ability to penetrate deep layers of the skin. The hve a capacity to introduce oil compounds into the skin, with the primary goal of accessing the deeper layers of the epidermis that a regular moisturiser and water based product cannot reach. All the oils compounds and those precious ingredients move through the skin's protective barrier, allowing them to go beyond the surface layer, known as the stratum corneum. For anti-aging purposes, we advise that you mainly opt for oil-based serums due to their exceptional capability to deeply permeate the stratum corneum. Improved absorption and sealing effect

Oils works their best when used after any water-based products and/or emulsions (creams, which are typically a combination of water and oil). The oil used on top of your water based product creates an occlusive barrier over the skin and encourages further penetration into the skin. In result any product applied on skin prior to oil will be better absorbed, will penetrate deeper and will not evaporate.

How to use facial oils It is important to remember that oils do not contain any water, therefore they cannot hydrate your skin - this is something only water can achieve. However, water evaporates quickly and doesn't reach deeper layers of your skin. As you can see, the best solution is to use a combination of both water and oil. We recommend that your beauty routine looks as follows: 1) Cleanse - cleaning your skin using facial cleansers and/or gentle scrubs 2) Tone - this is an optional step involving facial toners to balance out skin's natural pH and improve penetration of products 2) Moisturise & Hydrate - This is where you use water based serums, gels, essences and/or emulsions (creams and serums containing both oil and water) 3) Seal - Now that your skin is prepped and hydrated you can use your oils and oil based serums to increase the penetration of all your ingredients and to prevent them from evaporating to quickly. We recommend that you apply your oil on damp skin. This is important because it encourages quicker absorption and further penetration of all ingredients to work together synergistically. In fact, you should try to apply each one of the products on a slightly damp skin. Your cream will work more effectively if you apply it on on damp skin spritzed by a facial mist, and your oil will work better when applied on skin that has not yet fully absorbed your water based serum. 4) Apply SPF - last but not least :) If you take your anti-aging journey seriously this step cannot be overlooked!
